Last week I started a load of laundry right before I went to bed. Steve and I were talking before we fell asleep and I heard a strange noise from the laundry room. It sounded like a grinding noise, but it stopped and so I of course fell asleep.
The next day while doing laundry the washer would make the strange grinding noise at the end of the last spin cycle. I knew it wasn't good but I wasn't sure what it was. A few more loads of laundry were done. That night I heard another strange noise coming from the laundry room, this time it sounded like an electronic buzzing. After I investigated I noticed the last load of laundry had finished the cycle but the washer kept making a noise like it was trying to kick on. Weird, but I turned off the machine and went to bed (do you see a theme?).
Friday morning I decided to do one more load of laundry to see what the washer would do (great diagnostic tool right?). I noticed the washer hadn't completely drained all the water from the load the night before, not great but oh well. On this final load of laundry the washer made some truly strange loud grinding noises. Then there was a smell of something electrical or gears burning. No good. I decided it was time to call in the experts.
My dad and Steve took the whole thing apart. I was a little surprised to look out the window and see it in so many pieces!
They were pretty confidant they could fix the washer. They bought a few new parts and put it all back together. But it wasn't fixed.
Steve called a repair man who strongly suggested just buying a new washer. Steve's Uncle gave us his washer and dryer (that were just sitting in storage) when we got married. We really used it a lot. I am always so grateful to have my own washer and dryer, especially now with 3 kids and all the dirty clothes they make.
Saturday we headed off in search of a new washing machine (there are so many options). We found one we liked, and that would fit in our laundry room and we brought it home.
Steve being the frugal handy man that he is wanted to take out the brand new parts that he had put in the old dryer. You just never know when you might need them again. As he was taking it apart he noticed something stuck in the hose that is connected to the pump.
He pulled out a very mangled baby sock. Some how one of Colton's socks had been sucked up into the inner workings of the washer and caused some major problems.
A few days before I had done laundry and noticed that I was left with a single Colton sock that had no match. After checking all the usual locations (hamper, laundry room floor, etc) I just gave up deciding that sometimes socks just disappear. Well now we know the truth, sometimes washers just eat the missing socks!
Once the sock was removed the washer worked just fine. Sine we already had the new washer and were a little worried about the wear and tear on the motor we decided to keep the new one. Our old machine found a new home at Steve's old fire station, washing dirty, smokey nomex gear.
The pair of socks reunited. Sadly these are some of my favorite socks for Colton to wear
