I love going to the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Middletown Cemetery. We started going when my dad started to participate in the ceremony (I don't think I knew about it before). It is a really nice ceremony reflecting on those who have served in the military.
My dad read the names of all the Veterans who are buried in the Middletown Cemetery and then he gave a short talk about Memorial Day and military service. I enjoy listening to him every year.
One year after the ceremony my mom and I talked about getting our Ward to donate a wreath and this year was the second year we made that happen.
Here are the Veterans in attendance being recognized for their service.
I enjoy taking a moment to reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and I love that my kids are getting to see and hear about those who have sacrificed to protect our freedoms.
After the service we walk through the cemetery finding the headstones of people we knew. This year the girls were very interested in the headstones, though Eva had a hard time grasping the concept of death. After we came home Eva kept asking why Mary (a random headstone we stopped to look at) burned. She is getting confused because part of the cemetery burned and she could see the burned trees and I had tried to explain that a cemetery is where people are buried after they die.
We are both getting frustrated because I keep trying to explain that Mary didn't burn, she just died. Eva keeps insisting that she died because she burned. This has gone on all day long. As of now she thinks everyone who has died burned to death.

This is such a neat tradition and a wonderful way to teach your kids about the true meaning of Memorial Day. And I was laughing so hard at the end part. I had to read it aloud to Rich I thought it was so funny. Don't you love trying to teach them about these abstract ideas?!
