Fun With Dirt

The last Saturday in April our Ward participated in the Mormon Helping Hands by helping out at the new park in town.  I am so excited that we will have a nice park with grass in town, in front of the new library.
Allyson had a blast playing in the dirt with the kids.  I had her bring her little plastic shovel so she could "help", she had so much fun.

She loved following the bigger kids around and "working".  I had a hard time keeping track of her, she was all over the place.

Devin and Allyson, so cute.  I wish I had a picture from behind them, Allyson has her arm around Devin.  She is such a cutie.  Rumor has it that she is quite the kisser in nursery, so we will have to watch out!

At home we have been getting our grow boxes ready for our garden.  The first year we lived here I attempted to grow a few tomato plants.  They weren't fenced in well enough and it didn't go too well.  This year I am attempting again.  We have our grow boxes with hardware cloth to keep out the gophers and will soon have a fence around the boxes.  Gardening in Lake County is not for the faint of heart, it takes a lot of work.  Here's hoping for fresh tomatoes and cucumbers!

Allyson loves playing in the dirt! I tired to keep her out of the grow boxes by letting her play in the blue and white tubs of dirt (from my first attempt at gardening) but she wanted to play in the big boxes.
I love that she was helping fill the boxes with dirt one shovelful at a time.

I had to keep reminding her to keep the dirt in the box.

Look how proud she is, love it.

With all the warm weather and playing outside we have been talking a lot about what to do if we see a snake.  At Grandma's house Allyson learned to stay out of the long grass where the snakes might be. She still talks about it all the time.
Yesterday when I told her I saw a rattlesnake at work she said "whoa!" in the cutest voice ever.  We talked about what we do when we see a snake (run away, tell mommy and daddy).  Then as we were in the yard I noticed some birds going crazy over by the bird house in the driveway.  They kept dive bombing something.  They were dive bombing a snake that was climbing up the tree to the bird house! I yelled for Steve and went to see what kind of snake it was.  It was only a gopher snake (thank goodness) so we tried to keep the cats from bothering it.  Steve being crazy picked it up (gross) to show Ally.  Unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me so no picture, sorry.  It is that time of year.  Here's hoping the gopher snake keeps all the rattlesnakes away!
